Bốn kỹ năng để trả lời câu hỏi

1. Có những câu hỏi cần phải trả lời bằng cách trực tiếp (Có, không).
2. Có những câu hỏi cần phải trả lời bằng cách hỏi ngược.
3. Có những câu hỏi cần phải trả lời bằng cách im lặng (Bỏ qua một bên).
4. Có những câu hỏi cần phải trả lời bằng cách phân tích, giảng giải rộng ra.

“Này các Tỷ-kheo, có bốn cách thức để trả lời câu hỏi. Thế nào là bốn?

Có câu hỏi, này các Tỷ-kheo, đòi hỏi câu trả lời nhất hướng (một chiều dứt khoát); có câu hỏi, này các Tỷ-kheo, đòi hỏi một câu hỏi phản nghịch; có câu hỏi, này các Tỷ-kheo, cần phải để một bên; có câu hỏi, này các Tỷ-kheo, cần phải trả lời một cách phân tích.

Four skillful ways of answering questions:

1. There are questions that should be answered categorically, for example, yes or no answer.

2. There are questions that should be answered with an analytical (qualified) answer. You explain the answer in detail defining and redefining the terms.

3. There are questions that should be answered with a counter questions.

4. There are questions that should be put aside.

“There are these four ways of answering questions. Which four? There are questions that should be answered categorically [straightforwardly yes, no, this, that]. There are questions that should be answered with an analytical (qualified) answer [defining or redefining the terms]. There are questions that should be answered with a counter-question. Cattārimāni bhikkhave pañhavyākaraṇāni. Katamāni cattāri:

Atthi bhikkhave pañho ekaṃsavyākaraṇīyo, atthi bhikkhave pañho vibhajja vyākaraṇīyo, atithi bhikkhave pañho paṭipucchā vyākaraṇīyo, atthi bhikkhave pañho ṭhapanīyo.

Imāni kho bhikkhave cattāri pañhavyākaraṇānīti.

Ekaṃsavacanaṃ ekaṃ vibhajja vacanāparaṃ,

Tatiyaṃ paṭipuccheyya catutthaṃ pana ṭhāpaye.

Yo ca nesaṃ tattha tattha jānāti anudhammataṃ,
